Timothy Garton Ash and C. Fred Bergsten write on the financial crisis in Europe.
Ash, the pessimist, writes that there is a real possibility that monetary union could dissolve and the Euro become a failed experiment. Bergsten argues that the Euro will not fail because all interested parties know that the resulting political and economic disaster is too great a price to pay. Interestingly, both recognize that the greatest single driving force behind union are the European people’s (especially German people’s) personal memories of the world wars and the desire to develop a European Germany.
