World Cup

Argentina’s first game in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa is about to begin.  They play Nigeria.  It’s very exciting to be outside the US during World Cup. Robert was in Italy in 1990 and Japan in 1998 (and in LA for the final in 1994).  He has little more than an anthropological interest in the event, but it reminds him that the “rest of the world” finds the World Cup to be extremely important.  Extremely.  Argentina has not won the World Cup for 24 years and Robert can tell you that it would be a tremendous uplift for the country if they did it this year, and a huge letdown if they don’t do well.

It’s  fun to see so much of South Africa on television.

Anyway, Robert’s lying low, watching the game on TV.  He does not want to be standing around when they start to beat up foreigners and burn cars!

Miraflores

Robert is spending five days in Peru. He’s staying in the Lima, in the Miraflores neighborhood, which is a collection of high-rise apartment buildings, hotels and shopping centers on a sea-cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. He had not been in Lima for over ten years. The Miraflores area was beginning to be built out then, but it is now very packed with Marriots and Tony Roma’s, Starbucks, Radio Shacks and Chili’s. All very “tastfully” done. He’s sure that the rest of Peru, the Andes, smaller cities and the rest of Lima are not as changed. Perhaps he’ll go to Arequipa this weekend. While in Lima he is staying at the large ocean-view apartment of his friends the Cardenases.

Alternative Therapy

Nothing soothes a bad case of pink-eye like strapping on a pair of patent leather pumps. Actually, his strut may be better than Mira’s. Plus, what’s going on with that 1976 David Bowie haircut?  Robert II doesn’t know whether to cry or to . . . cry.
